How To Do Hair In a French Braid

by Candace Right

Although it looks really complicated, it's actually quite easy to learn how to do hair in a French braid. The first thing you will do is brush the hair to remove all tangles, and smooth on a holding gel or mousse. The mousse will help keep your hair in place while you work on it.

Now you'll need to take a section of hair from the front, where the bangs are (or where they would be). You're focusing on the section of your hair that goes from temple to temple, or right above the ear line.

Separate the section into three even pieces. Start by braiding the right section over the middle section. Remember to hold the braid tight or some hair will slip out of your hands.

Now to continue you bring the left segment over the middle segment. As you learn how to do hair in a French braid, you should keep a spray bottle of water nearby in case your hair starts to dry out. It's easier to handle when it's wet rather than dry.

Now take more hair from the left side of your head with a comb. This strip of hair should begin about an inch or so down from the temple. You'll be adding this to the left section of your braid.

You will do the same on the right side of the head. Then, braid the right section of hair over the middle section. Continue on, braiding the left segment over the middle one.

You will continue braiding and adding sections of hair until you get to the bottom of the head. Finish up the braid by braiding the bottom or the loose part of the hair into a regular braid.

Now you can tie it in place with a pony tail holder or a ribbon. If you practice, learning how to do hair in a French braid is easy. Soon it will be like second nature, even if you don't necessarily get it right the first time.
