Who is Affected by Acne Pimples?

by Valerie DeVette

Just in the United States, 60 million Americans have acne, so it is a condition many people have had to learn to live with. As a matter of fact, some people have become experts on acne because they are so used to it, knowing exactly what to do when a break out will appear. They are expert on products that get rid of acne because they have tried them all in search of the most suitable one for their skin. The bad news is that everyone gets acne at some point of their lives, even if it is a sporadic breakout

Acne can develop if the openings of the skin are blocked when the sebaceous glands send oil to the surface to lubricate the skin. An accumulation of that oil happens and bacteria get to the area in order to feed on it, which causes inflammation and a pimple. When the inflammation is near the surface, a postule is formed. In case it is deeper in the skin, the result is a papule or pimple. And if the inflammation goes even deeper into the skin, then the result is a cyst. The mass of dead cells becomes pus. If that pus gets to the external part of the skin, it becomes a whitehead. However, if the pus becomes affected by the oxygen, then a blackhead is formed.

Approximately 80% of teenagers get acne. This is because they start to suffer hormonal changes, which stimulates the sebaceous glands, and they create an over production of sebum, and therefore, the accumulation of oil underneath the skin, getting facial acne most of the time. If a treatment is not followed to help it, acne gets worse. If you have got acne, then it is very important that you consult a dermatologist or that you find a good product to keep it under control.

Who Gets Pimples besides Teenagers?

Thinking that people who don's have oily skin do not get acne is a myth. In their cases, it can happen especially in winter time, when their skin gets so dry because of the reduction of humidity in the air that their skin can crack and is more vulnerable to bacteria, leading to breakouts. Pollution is another agent that can lead to acne if the skin is not cleansed well. The body is protected from pollutants by the skin, but they can clog the pores, which leads to sebum accumulation and possible acne breakouts.

Adults can also get acne. Statistics say that 25% of male adults and 50% of female adults get acne breakouts in their adult life. There are many reasons why an adult can get acne, such as a reaction to a cosmetic product, stress, a hormonal change, etc. Acne skin care is a subject that we should all know about, since we are all vulnerable to acne.
