Options in Acne Scar Removal

by Martha Fitzharris

Scars are the result of an injury to the skin. The most common types of scars to have on the face are those that result from acne. It has been studied and proven that acne scars are often a huge cause of stress, anxiety and embarrassment among both men and women. If you have acne scars, it is recommended that you increase your knowledge on acne scarring and the various types of acne scar treatments that are available. This information will answer some typical questions about acne scars and the treatments available to you in acne scar removal.

Treatment Options

A considerable factor that can determine what scar treatment option would be the most appropriate for you depends on the size and shape of the scars. Some procedures are more abrasive or more surgically involved while others work on the surface of the skin. A popular method is done with lasers, others with dermabrasion, microdermabrasion or chemical peels, yet many opt for acne scar creams or lotions as they are easily administered at home and tend to be effective if used over time. Let's take a closer look at these treatment options.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy removes scar tissue by burning off the top layers of skin and helping to tighten underlying layers. Although many people have had successful outcomes with laser therapy, this treatment can prove to be extremely costly as usually a few sessions are necessary to reach desired results. Laser surgery is also known to be considerably painful as it is characteristically more invasive in comparison to other treatment options. Long recovery periods follow laser surgery and some may experience seeping, crusting and discoloration.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion uses a wire brush that spins at high speeds in order to 'sand' down the top layers of skin. The idea is to rid you of the outer layers of skin that contain scar tissue and imperfections, and reveal a smoother, clearer layer below. This treatment requires a freeze agent type anesthetic. This treatment is more appropriate for deeper types of acne scars. A fairly painful recovery period follows the dermabrasion procedure. There is also a period of discoloration that follows, but the skin will eventually return to its natural color, however for up to 6 months it is advised to avoid direct sunlight.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a less intense form of skin resurfacing. This procedure is done with small sterile particles that are then removed along with the dead skin with a suction device. Microdermabrasion does not require anesthetic or long recovery periods because of its superficial nature. However, because it is superficial it is only appropriate for surface scars and will fail to remove deeper dermal scarring.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peel treatments entail the application of strong combinations of chemicals that dissolve the outer layers of the skin. After the procedure, the resulting underlying layer of skin remains revealed and without the imperfections and scar tissue that affected the top layers of the dermis. In order to remove acne scars, deep peels are necessary which often have more prominent results but also more pain and longer recovery periods. Deeper peels usually use anesthetic and often require pain medication. After effects of chemical peels include swelling, crusting, and discoloration that could last for several months.

Skin Care Products

Topical acne scar removal skin creams are available in both natural and medicated forms and can offer a great alternative to more expensive and invasive scar removal procedures. Natural acne treatment creams aim to address the cause of the problem rather than just treating the visible effects of scarring. This type of topical treatment may require a little more patience, but can offer the same results, reducing even the most severe acne scars of any type, size or shape. These topical acne creams are optimal in removing damage caused by years of acne. They help soften the skin, help treat and eliminate existing scar tissue, and prevent new acne blemishes from leaving you more scars in the future.
